How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly wage in Norway?

Divide the annual salary by 1,950, the hours in a year at the standard 37.5-hour week (37.5 × 52). NOK 585,000 a year is NOK 300 an hour and NOK 48,750 a month, since monthly pay is a twelfth of the annual figure. If you work other hours, divide by your weekly hours times 52.

About the Hourly Wage Calculator

In Norway, pay is usually stated as an annual salary (årslønn), even for jobs paid monthly, while part-time and temporary work is often paid by the hour. Converting between them takes a fixed number of hours. A full-time week is 37.5 hours under the state's and most other collective agreements, so a full-time year is 37.5 × 52 = 1,950 hours, and a full-time month is 1,950 / 12 = 162.5 hours. That is how the state's own personnel handbook sets an hourly wage, and it is what this calculator uses unless you change the hours.

If you work part-time, or under a shorter full-time norm — some shift and rota work has 35.5 or 33.6 hours — enter your own weekly hours. The hourly wage comes out the same whether you enter a full-time salary at 37.5 hours or your part-time share of it at your own hours; only the monthly and annual figures change.

Overtime is work beyond the law's limits for normal working hours: 9 hours in 24, and 40 hours in seven days (Working Environment Act § 10-4). For overtime, the employer must pay at least 40% on top of the ordinary hourly wage (§ 10-6 (11)); many agreements pay 50%, and 100% in the evening and at weekends. The calculator takes any supplement and shows what the overtime adds to your month and year. It doesn't calculate tax or holiday pay.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is a full-time month in Norway?
162.5 hours at the usual 37.5-hour week: 37.5 hours × 52 weeks = 1,950 hours a year, divided by 12 months. Some months have more working days than others, but a monthly salary is a fixed twelfth of the annual salary, so 162.5 is the figure used to convert between monthly pay and an hourly wage.
Why 1,950 hours a year?
Because the normal full-time week under the state's and most other collective agreements is 37.5 hours, and 37.5 × 52 = 1,950. Statens personalhåndbok, the state's personnel handbook, sets hourly wages this way. The 2,080 hours common in other countries is 40 × 52: if your contract really says 40 hours a week, enter 40 and the calculator divides by 2,080.
What counts as overtime?
In law, work beyond 9 hours in 24 or 40 hours in seven days (Working Environment Act §§ 10-4 and 10-6). Many collective agreements set a shorter week and pay overtime beyond the agreed full-time hours. If you work part-time, extra hours up to the full-time level are usually additional work (merarbeid), paid at the ordinary hourly wage — the state's agreement, for example, pays overtime only beyond the full-time hours per day or week.
How much is the overtime supplement?
At least 40% of the ordinary hourly wage, by law (Working Environment Act § 10-6 (11)). Collective agreements often pay more: the state pays 50%, and 100% between 20:00 and 06:00 and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The state also works out the hourly wage for overtime as the annual salary divided by 1,850 rather than 1,950, which gives a slightly higher base. Enter your own supplement above.
How much overtime can I work?
Without an agreement, at most 10 hours in seven days, 25 hours in four weeks and 200 hours in 52 weeks (Working Environment Act § 10-6 (4)). A business bound by a collective agreement can agree in writing with the union representatives on up to 20 hours a week, 50 hours in four weeks and 300 hours in 52 weeks (§ 10-6 (5)). The calculator warns when your monthly overtime would pass 200 hours over a year.
I work part-time — what should I enter?
Your own pay and your own weekly hours. If your contract states a full-time annual salary — for example NOK 550,000 at 100% — you can enter that with 37.5 hours instead: the hourly wage comes out the same, and the monthly and annual figures show the full-time level.
Does the calculator include tax or holiday pay?
No. All figures are before tax, and holiday pay (feriepenger) isn't included — it is worked out separately. For your pay after tax, see your tax deduction card (skattekort) or Skatteetaten's calculators.
Is the pay I enter stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server or stored. The conventions and legal limits the calculator uses were checked against the sources on 18 Oct 2026.
